I have a strong opinion about new .zip domains!

…but I will not express it here, because this is a all-age-appropriate blog.

Let’s review new top-level domains that Google announced. Just to know what’s in store.

  • .dad domain – it may be good for that one site for dad jokes, I guess?
  • .esq, .prof, .phd – not gonna judge; if I’d had a doctorate, I’d probably want a domain to scream about this fact to the world too.
  • .nexus - a nieche domain name; I have no opinion on that.
  • .foo - a fictional domain name that was used in a lot of examples; now it’s a reality. This is unpleasant, but it affecting you is on yourself, for not using a reserved .test domain.
  • .zip and .mov domains… why? Just why? Why would someone think it is a good idea? How could anyone with a technical background approve of it? It seems like someone decided: “let’s tax on hackers and concerned security researchers, because ‘don’t be evil’ don’t apply anymore”

Right now, a lot of domains are purchased by good people with good intentions – to either reserve a domain name and prevent hackers from abusing it (like notavirus.zip), or to raise awareness (like update.zip). However, even if all the potential domains were to be bought (making ton of cash for Google), it’s only a question of time until someone decides to stop paying for his domain and forefits ownership.

What can I say? Stay safe, educate your close ones and let’s wait until someone gets hacked to a “tax-form.zip” leading to tax-form.zip.exe file, or while trying to download codecs to “funny-cats.mov”.

P.S. Updating with another alarming trap, which is described in this Medium post, and illustrated in the following tweet:
